 The Talbot County Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Georgia DNR, is sponsoring the Annual Kids Fishing Rodeo on June 1st at Big Lazar Wildlife Management Area.  The fun starts at 8:00 a.m. and goes until Noon.  Kids ages 3-15 are eligible, but must be accompanied by an adult.  Junction City VFD will be there selling hamburgers and hotdogs.  It's a fun day and every kids goes home with a prize.  After noon and the rest of the day, adults fish free.  For more information call the Chamber at 706-665-8079.

The driving tour of Talbotton gives insight into an era in our history when this quaint village was one of the more populous communities in the state and its citizens had surprising influence on the development of Georgia and the Nation.

The tour includes 15 historic sites that you can discover on your own or with a taped guide. Brochure and tape are available at the Chamber of Commerce at the corner of South Washington and East Madison streets. Open Monday through Friday, 10-4.

Guided Tours of the Zion Episcopal Church (shown above) and Straus Memorial Hall are available by appointment. Call 706-665-8079.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION:

If you are looking for historical information on Talbot County for geneology or just for history, the Talbot County Chamber of Commerce has several books that might be of interest to you.

There Was A Land written by Judge Robert H. Jordan is a good comprehensive history of Talbot County and has an index of families in the back of the book.  This book is available for $21.50 and $25.00 if mailed.

History of Pleasant Hill written by Nelson Goolsby is a history of the Pleasant Hill area of Talbot County, Georgia featuring the Goolsby and Nelson families of that area.  Other families also featured are the Brooks, Foster, Hendricks, Ferguson, McCoy, Cosby, Hight, Daniel, Hancock and McDonald families.  This book is available for $28.00 and $31.50 if mailed.

Homage To A House written by C. Merrell Calhoun.  This book tells the history of the Pou-Thornton-Olive-Calhoun House built in 1836 and located at 171 N. Jefferson St. in Talbotton, Ga.  This book is available for $19.95 and $23.50 if mailed.
